Prof. Christopher J. Keyes [LIATe]
ADAM UsersThe Laboratory for Immersive Arts & Technology (LIATe) is a pioneering facility for the convergence of sound, science, and art within the digital realm.
Established in 2011, it operates as a joint university endeavor located in Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU). LIATe promotes transdisciplinary research and creative projects in immersive 3D audio and multi-screen video, fostering collaboration among composers, sound artists, video artists, computer programmers, scientists, and communication specialists.
The facility features Hong Kong’s exclusive 7.1 mastering suite, equipped with ADAM Audio SX Series monitors. LIATe’s main theatre doubles as a recording studio, equipped with advanced 3D microphone techniques and high-quality audio equipment, complemented by a stereoscopic 3D video display and playback system. Through these state-of-the-art resources, LIATe aims to cultivate a cutting-edge community in immersive technology and advance the artistic potentials of contemporary and future formats.
Prof. Christopher J. Keyes, a renowned pianist and composer, plays a prominent role in teaching at LIATe. He earned his doctorate from the Eastman School of Music, studying under notable composers including Joseph Schwantner and Samuel Adler. Keyes has received numerous awards, such as the Rudolf Nissim Award and several ASCAP Grants to Young Composers. His works have been performed in over 35 countries. Since the late 1990s, he has focused on electro-acoustic music and multi-channel audio. For his personal monitoring setup, he chose a pair of ADAM Audio S2V nearfield monitors (see photo at the top of the article).
“For the mastering suite we auditioned and compared several high-end pairs of monitors in a carefully controlled acoustic environment, matching levels to 0.1 dB. The ADAMs were clearly more detailed than the other well-known brands.”, he recalls.
